Volkswagen Golf V 1K (2003-2009) – Fuse Box Diagrams and Relays

Volkswagen Golf V Mk5 (1K, 2003-2009) has separate fuse panels in the passenger compartment, under the bonnet and in the high-current distribution block, plus dashboard relay carriers. The 49-slot SC panel is on the driver’s side dashboard. The engine E-box can be high (usually up to April 2005) or low (typically from May 2005), with further electrical changes around November 2005, May 2006 and May 2007.

The article preserves all 152 entries in six complete source tables, six original illustrations and alternative ampere ratings. Different engines, DSG, FSI/TSI, diesel and optional equipment can use different values. Never install a higher-rated fuse just because it is listed for another engine or year.

Where are the Volkswagen Golf V fuse boxes?

Cabin SC: remove the side dashboard cover after opening the driver’s door. Under the bonnet: open the fuse E-box cover next to the 12 V battery, on the left side of the engine compartment. Relay holders: behind the lower dashboard trim, near the driver’s knees; supplementary relays may also be below the E-box. Turn ignition off before opening any holder.

Golf V engine E-box high, fuses F1-F45

The high E-box uses a different 45-position fuse layout, found especially on older builds. ABS: F1 and F2 (30 A each). Front wipers: F31 (25/30 A). Horn: F5 (20/15 A). Starter: F15 in earlier installations. Do not apply the adjacent E-box low diagram to this high box; verify its physical fuse grid from the vehicle handbook.

Golf V main high-current fuses

This separate power distribution block carries alternator at position 1 (150/200 A), electromechanical steering at 2 (80 A), cooling fans at 3 (50 A), and optional cabin/auxiliary-heater or trailer supplies at 4-7. High-current fuse replacement must follow the manufacturer service procedure.

Volkswagen Golf V dashboard relays

The principal relay board has nine documented socket positions, which may serve the rear window heater, heated mirrors, horn, terminal X load reduction, washer pumps, blower or permanent supply. The relay’s printed housing number is not its socket number. Other variants use additional carrier positions for heating, starter and fuel pump.

Golf V fuse-box FAQ and checks

Which fuse protects the cigarette lighter?

SC24 (25 A) before approximately May 2006, or SC42 (20 A) in the later configuration. Check the build date and installed fuse-holder.

Where is the front windscreen wiper fuse?

Usually E-box low F19 (30 A) or E-box high F31 (25/30 A), depending on the physical fuse box.

Can the E-box low and high fuse diagrams be swapped?

No. They use different fuse-number sequences and protected circuits.

What if a 2009 Golf has a different fuse rating?

Some engines, markets and equipment variants differ from early models. Follow the correct factory handbook and never increase current rating to mask a fault.

For a later generation see Volkswagen Golf VII 5G. For separate models compare Polo VI. Their fuse assignments are not interchangeable.

Replace every fuse with the correct current and physical type. A recurring failure needs fault diagnosis, not a larger fuse.
