Volvo XC90 I (2003) – Fuse Box Diagrams and Ratings

The first-generation Volvo XC90 I (2003, P28) uses three main fuse boxes: under the bonnet, in a side panel of the dashboard and behind luggage-compartment trim. This 2003 model-year reference covers 80 separate positions across three fuse holders: 24 in the engine compartment, 38 inside and 18 in the rear cargo area, including unassigned slots.

The numbering is specific to Volvo XC90 2003, not every first-generation XC90. Fuse fitment can change with the T6 engine, all-wheel drive, optional equipment and market. Most importantly, engine position 3 and cabin position 16 differ between 2003 and the adjacent model year. Always check the installed fuse and correct handbook before replacement.

Volvo XC90 2003: where are the fuse boxes?

Under the bonnet: the engine compartment distribution panel sits under a clipped protective lid. It contains protection for ABS/DSTC, ECM, starter, headlamps, horn and wipers. Inside: a dashboard end cover, accessible by opening the door, conceals the 38-position cabin holder. Rear: another holder is behind side trim in the luggage compartment, near the rear electrical module and equipment.

This table preserves the exact amperages and unpopulated positions from the model-year chart. Wiper fuse 13 (25 A), ABS/DSTC fuses 14 and 19 (30 A each), washers 16 (15 A), starter 22 (25 A) and ECM 23 (5 A) are listed independently. The headlamp washer position 15 has 25 A in the referenced Volvo handbook, rather than the 35 A sometimes copied from secondary websites.

Engine fuse 3 is a 15 A vacuum-pump circuit on relevant 2003 engines. In the 2004 reference, this position is not populated. Do not fit a fuse in an unassigned slot without matching the original vehicle specification.

The side-panel cabin holder protects air conditioning, seats, central locking, infotainment, lighting, diagnostics and the fuel pump. Cabin fuse 11 (15 A) supplies the interior 12 V accessory socket. Cabin fuse 1 (30 A) feeds the heater blower, fuse 22 (5 A) is associated with the OBD II diagnostics system, and fuse 25 (15 A) supplies the fuel pump in this layout.

The rear power outlet has its own protection: cargo position 7 (15 A), separate from cabin fuse 11. Rear position 6 (10 A) controls tailgate release; 12 (15 A) supplies the rear window washer; 17 (7.5 A) supplies the AWD controller. Trailer wiring has separate permanent and ignition-switched circuits, if equipped.

Which XC90 2003 fuses should I check?

Interior 12 V socket: dashboard position 11 (15 A). Boot 12 V outlet: luggage compartment position 7 (15 A). These are not the same circuit, so a fault in one outlet does not necessarily affect the other.

Front wipers: under-bonnet 13 (25 A). Front washer pump: under-bonnet 16 (15 A). Rear washer: cargo 12 (15 A). Horn: engine 9 (15 A). Cabin blower: dashboard 1 (30 A).

Headlamps: engine 17 (10 A) right dipped beam, 18 (10 A) left dipped beam, 20 and 21 (15 A each) high beams. Starting or no-start condition: engine 22 (25 A) starter, engine 23 (5 A) ECM, dashboard 25 (15 A) fuel pump. Diagnosis should include the battery, wiring and ECU fault codes.

ABS/DSTC: check under-bonnet 14/19 (30 A each) and dashboard 17 (5 A). All-wheel drive: cargo 17 (7.5 A); a working fuse does not confirm that the AWD pump or clutch is functional.

Volvo XC90 2003 and 2004: important differences

Compare the Volvo XC90 2004 fuse box guide when checking nearby production years. On 2003 cars, engine position 3 can use a 15 A fuse for a vacuum pump; in the 2004 US chart it is unused. Cabin position 16 is 5 A in 2003 for T6 steering but 15 A in 2004 for T6 steering and vacuum-pump equipment.

Another Volvo family with a different electrical system is the Volvo C40 Recharge; its fuse numbering is not interchangeable with the XC90.
